Cheat Sheets { freebies }

The folks at ImprovePhotography.com have a great photo cheat sheet out there. It's a handy guide for when the settings aren't at the tip of your tongue. It is in Canon mode, and I know I tend to give more Nikon settings, so I can pick one to use as an example and break it down for both.

Since it's softball season, let's tackle the Sports Outdoor setting.
Camera/Mode          Shutter Speed         Aperture                Light Sensitivity   Focus
Canon - AV Mode   1/1000 minimum    f/2.8 (or lowest)    ISO 100                AI-Servo*
Nikon - A Mode      1/1000 minimum    f/2.8 (or lowest)    ISO 100                Continuous Servo AF**

*AI-Servo stands for Artificial Intelligence Servo and is a focus setting that continually tracks the subject, re-adjusting the focus accordingly, as long as the shutter button is pressed halfway.
**Continuous Servo AF (or CF) is a Nikon-specific focus mode which continually tracks focus so long as you keep the shutter release pressed halfway.

Shutter Speed, F-Stop (aperture) and ISO are all changeable via control dials (plus buttons).

Breakdown of Same Settings
Manual Mode - M (Canon), M (Nikon)
Aperture Mode (Value) - Av (Canon), A (Nikon)
Shutter Mode (Time Value) - TV (Canon), S (Nikon)
Program Mode - P (Canon), P (Nikon)

Not sure what your modes even do? GPSphotography.com has a great cheat sheet for canon explaining the different modes and when you want to use them. But now that you know the breakdown of Nikon and Canon modes, you could really doctor it for either.
