Fixing a Bad Photo

We've all had them...a photo that we really thought was going to be awesome, and then you view it on your computer and it's...well...it's crap. But There are ways to fix them...you aren't going to make it perfect, but you can certainly make it nice enough for a scrapbook! You can see in #1 my original was dreadfully dark because it was so sunny out that the flash didn't go off. Bad problem with taking outdoors. First thing I do is adjust the exposure (#2). In this case I bumped it up by +1.20 ~ be careful not to overexpose it because we have more steps to go. Step #3 and #4: I thought it still had too much blue and needed warming up, so I slid the temperature control from 4500 to 4750 and changed the reds in the picture to become more orange-red. Then I had to try and work the shadows out of her face. Step #5 I brought the darks to +42 (which was probably too much as she got a little washed out, but oh well) and then I took the shadow to +30. I didn't touch the highlights because I liked the look of sunlight on her face and didn't want to mess with that yet. Then I ran a color boost filter in Photoshop that I like to use and voila! Much better shot, right?
